The main qualification for the exam is +2 passed with PCM with 60% marks in each subject and a bachelor’s degree from recognized university.
The notification date of the exam is released on the internet by Union Service Public Commission. Candidates who qualified the written exam move ahead to the next round for interviews which are taken by the Services Selection Board (SSB). After the final selection, the candidate is sent to one of the following institutes for orientation training:
Girls, too, can appear for the CDS exam; however, they can only be appointed for the post of OTA (Officer’s Training Programme).
The syllabus and exam pattern for all the exams is similar, except for the OTA paper.
The syllabus for IMA, INA, and AFA is divided into 3 subjects and for OTA into 2 subjects.
The standard of the questions in Mathematics will be of grade 10 and for other subjects, it will be of graduation level.
To better understand the weightage of each topic, we recommend that candidates must study previous question papers of the CDS Exam.
The maximum marks allotted to the written exam and to the interviews are equal for each course i.e. the maximum marks allotted to the written exam and to the interviews are 300, 300, 300, and 200 each for admission to the IMA, INA, AFA, and OTA respectively.
CDS Exam Pattern for IMA, INA, AFA:
Subject | Duration | Maximum marks |
English | 2 hours | 100 |
General Knowledge | 2 hours | 100 |
Elementary Mathematics | 2 hours | 100 |
CDS Exam Pattern for OTA:
Subject | Duration | Maximum marks |

General Knowledge | 2 hours | 100 |
The written test consists of objective-type questions and every incorrect answer results in 1/3rd negative marking.
The CDS selection process consists of 2 stages. The first one comprises a written test. Once a candidate clears the written test, they have to appear for a 5-day SSB interview process. The interview will test the candidate’s psychological aptitude, personality, and intelligence. The final merit list is released soon after the completion of the two processes.
The exam is conducted twice a year. This year’s second exam (CDS II) is scheduled to be conducted on November 14, 2021.
There are as many as 339 vacancies this time.
The registration for the CDS 2 exam 2021 is now over. Candidates who missed out on applying can keep a track of the official notifications of the CDS exam for the upcoming year at the official address: https://www.upsc.gov.in/examinations/forthcoming-exams
